Good Shepherd College of Health Sciences is a Roman Catholic Institution of Higher learning, situated within the Good Shepherd Mission Hospital in the Lubombo region. It was established in 1972 under the Roman Catholic Diocese of Manzini. Since 1972, the College has been offering a Certificate in Nursing Assistant. Moreover, College lectures took place in a single room which was used for two separately scheduled classes as well as a demonstration room. Furthermore, Students who trained at the college offered their services to the hospital for which they were remunerated and were thus able to pay their tuition fees.
In the year 2010 the Government of Eswatini in collaboration with external stakeholders donated five fully furnished temporal structures which served as, two classrooms, Library and two Laboratories (computer and science laboratory), improving the College’s infrastructure from the single room.
The College has been a cognate part of Good Shepherd Hospital since her inception. However it has a strategic plan which shows the blueprint of the College’s direction in the next five years. The ultimate goal of the strategic plan is underpinned in the Essential Health Care Package for Swaziland MoH (2010) states that all Swazis must have access to the qualitative health care. In a bid to ensure qualitative health care services to the citizens, the College saw it necessary to produce competent nurses.
The College has a new structure, which comprises of six class rooms, well equipped demonstration laboratory, science laboratory, computer laboratory and administration block. The State-of-The-Art College was occupied in September 2016.
New curriculum was developed in 2010, which led to the introduction of Diploma in General Nursing; the first cohort of students was registered in 2013 and graduated in November 2016. In August 2017 the College introduced the Post Diploma Certificate in Midwifery.
The College has further introduced and enrolled its first cohort of students for the Diploma in Occupational Safety and Health in August 2018. All the above programs have been accredited by Eswatini Higher Education Council. It is against this background that the college intends to be a World Class Centre of academic excellence for health care professionals.
